OCPP 2.0.1 Replaces OCPP 1.6

With the rapid expansion of global electric vehicle charging infrastructure, ensuring efficient and secure communication between the Charging Station Management System (CSMS) and the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) has become increasingly critical. To this end, the Open Charging Alliance (OCA) has carefully crafted the Open Charging Point Protocol (OCPP), an open-source standard that has become a bridge connecting cloud based CSMS and EVSE.

Among the numerous versions of OCPP, 1.6J and 2.0.1 are particularly prominent. Although the 1.6J version has been widely praised for its intelligent charging features such as user authentication, load management, and data sharing, OCPP 2.0.1, as an upgraded version, is gradually demonstrating its potential to lead future changes in charging infrastructure, indicating a comprehensive surpassing of the 1.6 version.

The rise of OCPP 2.0.1 marks an update to OCPP 1.6:

A leap in security performance: OCPP 2.0.1 has achieved a qualitative leap in security, abandoning the traditional encryption method that relies on VPN and directly encrypting data packets at the protocol level to ensure the security of data transmission without the need for additional VPN or third-party services. The newly added security configurations, such as authentication, security firmware upgrade process, security logging, and event notification, have built a more robust security defense for the system.

Deepening of intelligent charging capability: This version significantly expands the intelligent charging function, allowing electric vehicles to directly report their required charging amount (in kilowatt hours) to the charging station. This innovation enables the charging management system to more accurately match the charging needs of each vehicle, achieving a more intelligent, grid friendly, and convenient charging experience.

ISO 15118 Integration and Customer Experience Upgrade: By seamlessly integrating with the ISO 15118 standard, OCPP 2.0.1 introduces cutting-edge features such as Plug&Charge, simplifying the charging process and allowing drivers to start charging simply by plugging and unplugging, without the need for cumbersome certification. Meanwhile, the encryption mechanism provided by ISO 15118 ensures the security of data exchange, supports intelligent charging, and efficient load management. In addition, the agreement also allows operators to customize charging station information and display charging details and fees in multiple languages, greatly enhancing the user experience.

Optimization of equipment management and maintenance: The equipment model introduced in version 2.0.1 gives operators unprecedented control and monitoring capabilities. Through a flexible reporting system, operators can real-time monitor the operation status of charging points, predict faults, and intervene in advance to ensure that charging facilities are always in optimal operating condition.

In summary, the widespread application and popularization of OCPP 2.0.1 is the future trend, which will gradually replace OCPP 1.6, bringing unprecedented efficiency improvement, safety guarantee, and user experience optimization to electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
